Adventure Tourism in Baltistan


       Baltistan with its height snow covered mountains attracts world wide attention for adventure love tourists. The great Karakuram range with score's spectacular mountains makes this region unique and is commonly known as the "paradise for mountaineer sharing and trackers". Few of the renowned highest peaks in Pakistan are located in the karakuram range.District Shigar is situated at a distance of 32 kilo meter from Skardu and Cold Desert also can seen during visiting to Shigar.

The K-2

       K-2, the "Godwin Austin" or locally called "Choghori", besides being the world's second highest peak, is the highest peak of Pakistan. The altitude of K-2 is 8611 Mtr (28250 ft).To measure the altitudes of various peaks in Karakuram range, these peaks were mapped in mid of 19th century, and were named as K-1 (Karakuram 1), K-2, K-3 and K-4 etc. as per the sequence of mapping.As these glaciers and mountains were almost impassable scholars, scientists, adventure travelers and traders entered Baltistan, through various mountain passes. These passes include the Karakuram pass, Chhorbat pass, West Muztagh pass, Saser Pass and Saltoro pass) many

Glacier with K.2

       All these mountain peaks and glaciers remained a source of great attraction to a large number of mountaineers, from various parts of the world during the last two centuries. Regular expeditions of world renowned mountaineers visit these mountains. Besides being a great source of income, it has also motivated many locals into this adventurous sport. Hassan Sadpara was a renowned mountaineer from Batistan. He summited K-2 and other peaks within Pakistan and climbed Mount Everest as well.

K2 is Khown as:

      As, K-2 was mapped 2nd highest after Mashabrum (K-1) that's why it was named so and since then is famous with this name. Attempts to summit K-2 started in the last century by many European and American climbers, however, they could not succeed in doing so. In July 1954, two Italians, Lino Lecedelli and Achille Campagnonoi, finally succeeded to summit K-2.Baltoro glacier which is 56 km (32.5 miles) long is also situated here,Shigar is famous for minerals. It hasfair deposits of jade and Abraq.

Braldo Valley:

      It is located 40km north of Shigar valley. It is wrapped in snow- covered peaks and largest glaciers. Askole:It is a small town located in the remotest region of Karakoram. It is the gateway of the world's fourteen highest peaks known as eight -thousanders.

Thungal:

      It is the second last village of Skardu Shigar jeep road and one has to go towards Askole for trekking.

Baasha Valley:

      The Baasha valley is famous for its hot springs.The Shigar river originates in the Karakuram mountains which takes a south-east direction for one hundred miles to its junction with the Indus at Skardu. Shigar river is a joint water of two tributaries: one is called the Braldo river and the other is the Basha river.

Mineral Resources in Shigar


     One of the important resource in Gilgit Baltistan is the presence of huge reservoirs of precious minerals are also in Shiger valley. Apparently these mountains look barren, but the mountains contain natural resources of worth billions of dollars in them. This region is surrounded by three world famous mountain ranges, the Hindukash, the Himalaya and the Karakorum Range. These mountains has almost all the minerals that Pakistan is currently offering to the world markets which include Topaz, Period, Emerald, Morganite, and Tourmaline. During this time exploration surveys have been  revealed that there are also riches amount of precious metals like Gold, Gypsum, Chalcopyrite, Uranium etc, are present in various mountains of Gilgit Baltistan


Water Resources


      Water is  also most important component for our life. Life cannot exist without water.Gilgit Baltistan is the measure water resource  form of glaciers as Baltistan region is khown as the hometown of glaciers.There are three world's largest glaciers outside from the polar region are in G.B,some of those  are Beafo Glacier, Baltoro Glacier, and Batura Glacier.Some of the glaciers besides on these glaciers about 5,217 smaller glaciers and 2,421 glaciers lakes are also found in Northern Area. Water of  these glaciers flow down into the Indus River . Other than glaciers, lakes, rivers, streams and springs are also found in different areas of Gilgit Baltistan. Major part of our country Pakistan is being irrigated by the water resources of Gilgit Baltistan.

Uses of Resources:

        Federal government is required to make Dams to store water resource which in turn not only can use for clean drinking water and for irrigation purpose but also can generate thousands megawatts, of electricity from each Dam. There are a potential to produce around 52,000 MW hydroelectric powers in the region.The total power capacity of these dams would be 11,600 MW on completion of the project. Other than glaciers, lakes, rivers, streams and springs are also found in different areas of Gilgit Baltistan.
