       It is one of the important place of Baltistan Division. Skardu  is the capital of  Baltistan region. It is called the paradise of mountainers. It is situated where the Shigar river meets the mighty Indus river. It has an airport. There is a bus stand for the transport services operating between Skardu, Gilgit and Rawalpindi. A hospital is also situated in Skardu. Commissioner of Baltistan division and Deputy Commissioner live in Skardu and the head offices of all departments are also located here. A beautiful building of Cadet College is also constructed in Skardu and studies has started in 2001. There are two Degree Colleges for boys and girls. Now government and private public schools, are also imparting modern education, in the sector. Many high schools for boys and girls are working efficiently, in the region and primary schools are also established, almost in every village.

      Baltistan has plenty of water reservoirs in the form of glaciers, snow, lakes and springs. A number of rivers and streams flow from the mountains of Baltistan which irrigate a vast area of Punjab and Sindh The great and renowned rivers are the Indus, Shayok, and the Shigar river other than a number of seasonal streams.

Languages 

      The main languages spoken in Baltistan are Kashmiri Urdu, Shina and Brushashki Balti is the national language of Pakistan. Being official language Urdu, is also used as the medium of instruction in the education institutions due to it's national importance. 

Skardu

        Like other districts of Gilgit Baltistan, skardu also has many beautiful places to visit. One of the unique feature of district Skardu is diversity of land where one can find lush green lands, snow capped mountains, waterfalls, lakes and cold deserts, all at one place. There are many tourist spots in Skardu which are famous and easily accessible. These places include, Upper Kachura Lake, (Foroq Tsho), Lower Kachura Lake (Lu Tsho) and Sadpara Lake. On the bank of Lower Kachura famous Shangrilla resort is present.

Tourists Spots in Baltistan

      Gilgit Baltistan is very rich in terms of its scenic beauty. There are glaciers, lofty mountains, rivers, waterfalls, cold and hot water springs and cold deserts, other than these beauties, Gilgit Baltistan is heaven for tourists due to its rich cultural heritage. Historical buildings and ancient civilization which makes Gilgit Baltistan, unique from other places of Pakistan.

       There are two cold deserts present in Skardu valley. One is the Sarfarangha cold desert which is situated at a distance of 20 minutes drive towards east from Skardu Recently this desert has gain national fame due to a car rally which was organized by tourism department of Gilgit Baltistan. In this rally along with local drivers famous national drivers also participated. The famous Indus River flows along the left side of Sarfarangha desert. Another cold desert known as Katpana desert is also present in Skardu city. This desert is situated at a distance of 10 to 15 minutes drive towards west from Skardu valley, The Indus River flows to the right side of this desert. Skardu air port is also present in Katpana valley.

Kharpocho Fort

        Kharpocho was built by Maqpon Bukha, The Raja of Skardu, during 1490 to 1515 AD. It stands on a foundation of granite blocks. The walls are solidly built of stones joined by wooden beams. This great fort had been constructed as strong as Gibraltar and was considered un-conquerable in those days. It remained the capital of Maqpon rulers of Baltistan for atleast five hundred years, till it was conquered by the Dogras in 1840 AD.Kharpocho fort is an important historical heritage of the region and is the king of forts. A small masjid is still exists in the fort.

       conquered all the tiny states around Skardu, and founded a united kingdom of Gilgit-Baltis around the beginning of the 17th century. Hilal Bagh and Chahar Bagh: These beautiful royal gardens were master pieces in Skardu.

Shangrila:

       The legend of Shangrila is alive in Skardu. It is the resort built around a beautiful lake which provides opportunity for all to enjoy the best of Skardu. There is also a upper Kachura Lake in Skardu.

Satpara Lake:

        It lies 8 kms south of Skardu surrounded by high glacial mountains. This lake has an island in the middle of its clear water. Now it has been converted in to a big dam..

This district has three sub divisions divisions which are Khaplu, Daghoni and Mashaburm valley.Hushay which is a village of Mashaburm valley is the gateway to various peaks and glaciers. Khaplu palace  and Chaqchan mosque.

 mosque are, interesting places to visit. Chaqchan mosque is built around 1500 AD. The famous Ghondoghoro pass is also situated in this districtwhich is 5650 m high and it is consider to be the most challenging trekking route of the world. Other places in valley are: (Hanjur Broq Surmo Broq, Thalay Broq and Saling Fish farm, Crystal Lake Sogha, Twins Waterfall Lahar,Kharkoo Ghola Blagha Ranga Crystal Lake Sogha, Twins Waterfall Lahar,Kharkoo Ghola Blagha Ranga and Shayok River Ghanche is situated at a distance of 102 km from Skardu city.

The Shayok River

 The main tributary of the Indus is the Shayok river which originates from the Karakuram mountains to the north of Leh and to the south- east of the Karakuram pass. At a short distance above the great north-western bend, it receives the water of the Chang Chhen-mo, or great Chang River. It also receives the waters of the Long-Kouma from the South-east. Near Hundur, it meets with the Nubra river. Distance from the primary source to the junction point of Shayok and Indus at Keris is four hundred miles. At surmo,the Shayok is also joined by two small rivers of Saltoro and Hushe.


Chaqchan Mosque

  This Mosque is situated in Khaplu Bala and is building was constructed during pre-islamic period and used as gompa by the Buddhists. When Amir Kabeer Syed Ali Hamdani came here, the population accepted Islam as the religion. Then this building was converted to a Mosque Khaplu Palace The beautiful palace of Yabgo rulers is situated at Doqsa built in 1860 AD, after the fall of Baltistan at the hands of Dogras.Construction material of this palace were brought down after dismantling the
fort of Thoqsi Khar among one of the most important national heritages of Pakistan. This religious Khaplu on the right bank of the Ghanche stream. Daulat Ali Khan got this palace situated at the top of the high mountain. This palace has a lot of wood work and beautiful arches.

 


 khanqah of Khaplu It was founded by Mir Syed Muhammad and completed in 1712 going through its further extension and reconstruction. Khanqah of Keris The Khanqah of Keris was built by Mir Mukhtar Akhyar in 1706 It is also an old and important historical heritage of Balistan. Tomb of Syed Mahmood Toosi It is situated in Skardu city. Syed Mahmood had came from Mahamood Toosi died in 1080 AD) This tomb was reconstructed in 1994 AD Tomb of Mir Arif & Mir Ishaque Both these tombs are in Thaghas Ghanche. Mir Arif came along situated just adjacent to it, is of Mir Ishaque who was his son-in-law. Tombs In Karis There are five tombs in Keris with wooden works. A number of throughout Baltistan.This is the biggest amongst all the Khangahs of Baltistan. Now this ding is Toos of Iran for preaching of Islam, along with his other three brothers. Syedwith his brother Mir Abu Saeed. Mir Arif stayed in Thaghas while Mir Abu Saeed went to Keris Mir Arif died in 1026 AH and is buried in Thaghas. Another tomb historical masjids, Khanqahs, Imam-bargahs, forts and tombs are scattered

Festivals in Ghanche

MAE-PHUNG

'Mae-Phung' is celebrated on 21st December every year. With celebrated as the beginning of spring season called "Ghbiar Nginkhim" in Baltistan. The youth spend time in the festival, by illuminating "Fire Balls" locally called "Danders", the hand held fireworks.the expanding light hours and every passing day from 21 December, this days is

Nauroz

Nauroze festival is celebrated in Baltistan with great zeal Persian language, with "Nau" means new and "roze" means day new cloths, greetings with friends and family and famous game of "Egg tapping" with each other They also share, various kind of foods among each other Nauroze.and zest with its roots found in Iran. The word "Nauroz" derived from . "the New day". It has celebrate on  March twenty one of  every year. The festivities includes wearing.


Egg Tapping

With its history in Europe as "Easter games",game, where one competitor holds the egg and other one strikes it. It is done the winner. In case of any tie i.e. both competitors able to break other's one end the decision is done by striking the middle part or the belly of the egg.Other visiting their relatives and surroundings. On the occasion of this festival, a variety of dishes are cooked in every house.. "Egg Tapping" is the favorite activity of Nauroze. It is a two person important festivity is the giving of colored eggs as a gift to the children on either ends of the egg and the one whose egg remains unbroken is declared.

Pakistan Day

Pakistan day is celebrated on 23 March, in order to for subsequent creation of Pakistan. This festival normally begin just after Nauroze festival, hence making a festival's week in entire Baltistan. On the conferences also held to highlight the aims and objectives of the celebration
generation. Independence Day commemorate the passing of the Lahore resolution in 1940, which paved the way of Pakistan Day, introducing the history of the Pakistan movement to the new eve of Pakistan Day, besides all other sports. activities; seminars and Pakistan came into existence on 14th August, 1947 after a of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. After independence of Pakistan, the brave people of Gilgit-Baltistan also revolted against Dogra regime and succeeded to liberate the independence day of Pakistan and Baltistan are celebrated on 14th August simultaneously.
